French Fries and Denial

March 13th, 2012

I got my blood test results last Tuesday, while eating some French fries, tater tots, and chicken nuggets from Sonic. One of the wife’s friends brought them over to share with her, so I had to be polite and have some too, right? Suffice it to say, Wednesday I started paying attention to my diet, and focused on eating less cholesterol and more fiber. That, and not nibbling, snacking, and snarfing up a bunch of fatty stuff between meals. See, I had thought that if I worked out at the gym five days a week I could eat whatever I wanted, except for maybe fast food, and still be healthy. I wasn’t averaging five days a week at the gym though, and I ate fast food, and so there I was with the pre-heart attack numbers in my blood test.

Did I mention that I don’t plan to get the prescription filled for the cholesterol medication? That’s what I decided on Wednesday, and on Saturday night I became further convinced that I could fix myself up through better diet. You see, on Saturday night we watched “Forks Over Knives.” Have you seen it? It’s a fantastic expose on the dangers of the American diet and our fixation on meat and dairy. Starting Sunday, this meat and cheese lovin’ fool has gone vegan. That, and I have purposed in my heart to quick the crazy snacking! Gah!! At 45 years old, some level of will power is reasonable to expect.

This morning I went to the gym, greatly in need of some encouragement that this vegan idea is going to work – God was gracious and gave me just the affirmation I needed, four pounds lost already! After just two days of really being in earnest about the dietary change! Shoot, I only went to the gym once last week and on Friday night I had pizza (and, um, a few fries, ..and bit of nachos, with the guys at the pub) so I’m thinking that four pounds was mostly in two days!!
